In 2016, Disciples Immigration Legal Counsel and Refugee & Immigration Ministries began training Disciples to be Community Navigators.
Community Navigators are leaders who provide reliable information about the immigration system, help protect others from scams, and empower their communities.
Session 1: Role of community navigators, Avoiding unauthorized practice of law, An overview of the U.S. immigration legal system
Session 2: Finding good legal help, Working with a lawyer, Avoiding scams, How congregations can support someone’s legal process
Session 3: TBD
*Each session includes an update on Disciples’ latest advocacy efforts and how you can involve your community.
Traditional Micronesian navigators sail thousands of miles between islands in the Pacific Ocean guided by a deep understanding of the stars, the clouds, and the sea. Community Navigators aim to expertly guide others in their communities through the often-troubled waters of immigration. Special thanks to Pastor Nerleb Likisap for sharing this inspiration with us.
